Tennis Star Venus Williams Plays in Albany Thursday

Seven time Grand Slam tennis champion Venus Williams will be in Albany Thursday for a special one-night visit as her Philadelphia Freedoms face the New York Buzz in World TeamTennis action.

The 29-year-old Venus, the older sister of Serena, is among the greats of women’s tennis. Venus has won 41 career titles including five Wimbledons and two US Opens. She has also reached the finals of all four Slams, 14 in all and with her sister, won her ninth career Slam doubles title Saturday at Wimbledon.

In 2000, Venus won the Olympic gold medal in women’s singles.

Venus also achieved the No. 1 ranking in 2002 and at present she’s No. 3 in the world following a finalist effort at Wimbledon over the weekend.

The home-standing Buzz are led by a quartet of USTA juniors including Alex Domijan and Sloane Stephens.
