The defending champion NY Buzz opened their 2009 World Team tennis season with 23-14 victory over the Philadelphia Freedoms.
With the core Buzz roster still overseas for the Wimbledon juniors, the team turned to a quartet of USTA alternate junior players led by Jarmere Jenkins and Lauren Embree. Jenkins teamed with former Albany Academy standout Matthew Kandath to defeat Nathan Healey and doubles world No. 25 Travis Parrott 5-3. Jenkins also beat Healey in men’s singles 5-4.
Embree also won two sets for the Buzz, partnering with Allie Will to claim the women’s doubles and then closing the evening with a 5-1 victory over Asia Mohammad.
The Buzz will now enjoy a day off before welcoming the Boston Lobsters to Albany U’s SEFCU Arena at 4:30pm Sunday. The Lobsters are paced by former Top 20 and Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jan-Michael Gambill
Next week Venus Williams will be in town on Thursday night, July 9. Venus is bidding for her 6th Wimbledon title Saturday. Tickets for Venus night or for any other of the Buzz home matches are available by calling 518-378-BUZZ.
