July 18 - Pete Sampras stole the fans Wedneday night at the CDPHP Tennis Complex, but the NY Buzz stole the match. Sampras, making his first trip back to Schenectady since 1988 when at a 16-year-old he reached his first ATP semifinal, wowed a sold-out crowd of over 2,500. The 14-time Slam winner opened the night showcasing his vintage game in a 5-1 win for his Newport Beach Breakers in men's doubles. But it was Buzz's Rik De Voest getting the better of Sampras in the ensuing men's singles, knocking out the Hall of Famer 5-3 in men's singles to bring the Buzz back within two. The Buzz hung tough and entered the fifth set tied at 15 with the Breakers. It was Greta Arn and De Voest coming up big to clich the victory 5-1 giving the Buzz an exciting 20-16 win and keep their playoff hopes alive. The Buzz get a few days off before travelling Saturday to to face the NY Sportimes, before welcoming the same Sportimes team and top WTA star Ashley Harkleroad Sunday evening.
