April 20 -- The New York Buzz announced their 2005 World Team Tennis schedule today. Among the stars competing at Central Park?s Stadium Court in Schenectady this summer include former No. 1s Jim Courier and Martina Hingis along with American star Brian Vahaly.
The Buzz will begin their 2005 season at home against the Kansas City Explores Wednesday night, July 6, and will conclude on the road at Springfield, Missouri, on July 23. The Buzz will play seven home night matches and seven road matches during their 14-game season.
Courier, a winner of four Grand Slam titles including two French Opens and two Australian Opens and reached finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open, will play in two matches for the Buzz and will make his first career visit to Schenectady on July 13. The 34-year-old spent 58 weeks at the No. 1 Ranking and was a member of the US Davis Cup team for seven years, helping them to victory in 1992 and 1995. Courier currently plays on the ATP Senior tour when he?s not in the commentary booth for NBC and USA Network during their tennis coverage.
The 24-year-old Hingis is a five-time Grand Slam winner posting three victories at the Australian Open and one each Wimbledon and the French Open and will make her Schenectady appearance when her NY Sportimes travel to Central Park on Monday, July 11. All told, the Swiss star won 40 career WTA titles and spent 209 weeks at the No. 1 ranking. And she still remains the youngest player to rank No. 1 on the WTA tour when she first reached the top spot at age 16 years, 6 months, on March 30, 1997.
The personable Vahaly will also make his debut in Schenectady. The talented 25-year-old has been as high as No. 64 in the world just a few years ago, and has wins over former French Open champions Juan Carlos Ferrero and Michael Chang, and he just won the Tallahassee Challenger earlier this month. But Vahaly, a double-major graduate from the University of Virginia, may be best known for his off court image having been selected among People Magazine's 25 Most Eligible Bachelors issue in 2003.
Also on the 2005 Buzz roster are a trio of Australians, Evie Dominikovic, Bryanne Stewart and Jaymon Crabb. Stewart, who along with Dominikovic is playing Fed Cup for Australia this week, recently won the doubles title at the prestigious Bausch and Lomb event in Amelia Island earlier this month.
