July 5 - The defending champion Delaware Smash proved too tough for the NY Buzz in the opening night of the 2004 World Team Tennis season. The Smash were paced by the strong play of veterans Paul Goldstein and David Wheaton for the 24-12 win. Goldstein set the tone early for Delaware with an opening 5-2 win in singles over Buzz Justin Bower. He then joined fellow Stanford standout David Wheaton to beat Bower and Shaun Rudman in the doubles. The lone bright spot for the Buzz was the play of 15-year-old Ukraine prodigy Viktoriya Kutuzova who defeated Samantha Reeves in women's singles play. Tonight, the Buzz play host to the Philadelphia Freedoms.
